1 Physical constants are averages only and are not to be used as product specifications. They may vary up to 5% of the values shown.
2 Theoretical coverage at dry film thickness of 1.0 mils (25 μ) based on 100% application efficiency. It does not take normal production
losses into account.
3 Brookfield RVT (Measured with spindle 2 at 20 rpm/25°C).
4 (when applied and cured as a full system i.e. primer, midcoat, and/or topcoat)
* See Food Contact section.
Application Method – Spray On
Surface Preparation – Primer The 856N-line of Teflon® topcoats must be used with a Teflon® industrial coatings primer.
Apply primer over clean and roughened surface and apply as directed on primer fact sheet.
Bake or force dry per directions in appropriate primer fact sheet.
Primers – FDA Compliant
959-2XX series 420-703; 858N-100
Primers – Non Compliant with FDA
850N-300 series
958-2XX series 851N-204
Filtering 200 mesh (approximately 75 μm) stainless steel or nylon.
Recommended DFT Apply 856N-2XX coatings at a total DFT of 15–25 μm (0.6–1.0 mil). It is recommended to
apply minimum 2 coats of 856N-2XX, especially for end uses where low porosity is essential.
Maximum 15 μm (0.6 mil) per coat. Flash dry to prevent popping or cracking during the bake.
Drying 5 minutes at 176 – 212°F (80–100°C).
Curing (me-tal temperature) Single top coat – The first topcoat must be sufficiently baked to cure the primer. For example:
Bake If Using Primer
5 min. at 750°F (400°C) or 850N-3XXX line;
10 min. at 700°F (370°C) 851N-204; 858N-100
60 min. at 575°F (300°C) or 958-2XX line; 959-line; 420-703
5 min. at 700°F (370°C)*
Multiple top coats – Apply another 10–15 μm (0.4–0.6 mil) layer of topcoat. Bake 30 min. at
625–650°F (330–343°C). Repeat for all subsequent coats until desired film build up to 125 μm (5 mil) is reached.
For the final coat: Up to 180 min at 664°F (340°C).
Clean-up Water
Thinner/Additive Water
All recommendations are based upon best knowledge.
* All temperatures refer to me-tal temperature. For end uses where low porosity is
essential, multiple topcoats are required using the higher temperature bakes.

Handling and Storage
• Rolling once a month (15 min. at 30 rpm) will be beneficial to
the product stability and will reduce the settling.
• Roll before use and bring to room temperature (15–20 min. at
20–30 rpm).
• Storage life is 6 months at room temperature, 65–80°F (18–27°C).
• After opening, the pail must be carefully closed to avoid solvent
evaporation that would result in gelling.
• Water-based product, protect from freezing.
For detailed information on Health & Safety refer to Material
Safety Data Sheet and “Safety Handling Guidelines for
Fluoropolymers”.*
Food Contact
This (these)layer(s), in combination with the food contact
compliant recommended other layer(s) of the coating system,
is (are) designed to be used in direct contact with food. Applied
according to the application method and instructions on this fact
sheet and the fact sheets for the other coatings recommended
here, the fully cured coating system will comply with US FDA
food contact regulations and can be sold and/or used for food
contact applications for non stick coatings in Europe following
the national legislations of each European country, having
specific regulations for this category of coatings (non-stick, high
temperature resistant). Certain primer / topcoat combinations
may have limitations in some countries. Any changes or variations
in primer/topcoat combinations and/or inpidual coating
thickness from what is indicated in this fact sheet should be assessed
for food contact applications prior to its use. For details
and information please contact your DuPont representative.
In Europe, in the case of incomplete compliance in one country,
the product can, on the basis of its full compliance in at least
one Member State of the European unio, be used for direct
food contact in all Member States according to the Article 28-30
(ex Article 30-36) of the Treaty of Rome as amended.
Compositional statements, referring to relevant national legislation,
are available on request.
856N-204 topcoat is NOT food contact compliant.
Disposal and Other Considerations
Please follow these guidelines as outlined in the “Guide to
the Safe Handling of Fluoropolymer Resins.
* A copy of the “Safety Handling Guidelines for Fluoropolymers” is
available from DuPont upon request
For disposal, please follow these guidelines:
• All treatment, storage, transportation, and disposal of this
product and/or container must be in accordance with applicable
national and local regulations.
• Do not discharge aqueous dispersions to lakes, streams or
waterways.
• Separate solids from liquid by precipitation and decanting or
filtering. Dispose of dry solids in a landfill that is permitted,
licensed or registered to manage industrial solid waste. Discharge
liquid filtrate to a wastewater treatment system.
• Incinerate only if incinerator operates at 800°C or higher and
is capable of scrubbing out hydrogen fluoride and other acidic
combustion products.
• Industrial fluoropolymer waste containing additives such as
solvents, primers or thinners must be regarded as special waste.
Companies should contact their local waste disposal authorities
for details of the relevant waste disposal regulations.
• Empty containers should preferably be cleaned and recycled.
If this is not possible, the containers should be punctured or
