冷起动暖车时，机油散热器从冷却水中吸收热量，使机油温度较快升高；当温度较高时，又通过冷却水降温。这样，机油的温度比较稳定且具有适宜的粘度。有些车辆的机油散热器的工作与否通过传感器来控制阀体的打开或关闭的，有的则是通过手动阀体来控制这一装置的工作与否（如是手动阀则在冬季低温时要关闭，到了外部环境气温升高时再打开此阀）。机油散热器对机油起到冷却的同时也起到防止机油变质的作用。若机油散热器破损会造成机油中进水或外部泄漏等。
